In the diving world, we often talk about technical equipment such as tanks, regulators, drysuits, and dive computers. Yet one of the most important — and often overlooked — components of the system is the valve: a small but absolutely crucial element that ensures a safe and controlled flow of air from the tank to your breathing system.
The valve on a scuba tank acts as a safety barrier between high-pressure air and your regulator. Its primary function is to allow controlled opening and closing of the air supply and to prevent gas from leaking when the tank is not in use. A malfunctioning valve — or using the wrong type — can lead to serious problems: from air leaks in the best case to life-threatening underwater emergencies in the worst.
Knowing the different types of valves helps you choose the right one for your dive type and equipment configuration:
Most commonly used in technical diving. They provide a better seal and are suitable for higher pressures (up to 300 bar). Ideal for twin tank setups and cold water diving.
Still common in recreational diving. Designed for pressures up to 232 bar. Easy to use but less suitable for extreme conditions.
Used in twin-tank configurations. Allow isolation of individual parts of the system, increasing safety in case of regulator failure.
Manifold Valves
Essential for sidemount and twinset configurations. Allow the diver to redirect airflow during the dive as needed.
