AP SMBC - Closed Surface Marker Buoy - is the original self-sealing surface marker buoy - much copied but never improved upon.
The SMBC inflates by simply deflating the second stage at the open end when submerged. The really clever bit is in the mouth, where our unique self-sealing barrier - or duckbill valve - forces itself closed when inflated to form an airtight seal.
The SMBC also has a streamlined flap that folds back over the mouth to prevent any drag effect on the sea anchor when used in the current. It can be used as a delayed action SMB or inflated at the start of a dive and towed as a standard surface marker. It rolls up nicely and can be pocketed, attached to the outer D-ring, or rolled into the dedicated SMB pouch on the rear left side of the AP Commando and Commando Explorer.
On the surface, the SMBC is pulled upright by the tension of the rope and clearly indicates the diver's position. The baffle prevents air spillage and the buoy remains inflated, allowing the surface crew to easily follow the diver or the diver to stay aloft and wave if separated from the boat. A message board, identification marker or reflector can be attached to the top lug.
